What is Tic Tac Toe?

How to Play

The rules for playing Tic Tac Toe are simple as follows:

It is played on a grid of three-by-three boxes.
Each player takes turns to mark a box in the grid with a symbol of their own (X or O).
The first player to mark any three boxes in a row (could be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) wins the game.
When all boxes are marked and no player achieved the required three in a row, the game ends in a humourless draw.

Always pick the middle square for your first move as it gives a maximum number of options.
Be aware of your opponent's moves and block any lines they may be trying to complete.
Try to create situations where you have two lines of two markers and your opponent can only block one.
If you are about to lose, try to force a draw by blocking all winning options of your opponent.

Tic Tac Toe has a deep-rooted past. The game's origins could be traced to Noughts and Crosses, a game well known in Rome and Egypt. By the 19th century, the present form of the game had spread throughout the world and had become a common pastime in schools and households, even in prisons. Notwithstanding its simplicity, Tic Tac Toe gave rise to various strategic theories and was studied mathematically in a number of papers.
